Save Money by Rebuilding Your Transfer Case

If your four-wheel drive isn’t working, you may have a problem with your transfer case. This piece of equipment uses drive shafts to connect the front and rear axles to your vehicle’s transmission. If you order the correct transfer case parts, you can save money by rebuilding the transfer case rather than purchasing a new one.

Lift your vehicle with four heavy duty jacks stands to work on the transfer case. You can access the transfer case by using a handheld drill to remove the bolts that hold the skip plate in position. Set the bolts and plate aside. Find the transfer case oil drain plug. Remove the plug and drain the transfer case fluid. Remove the shift linker, the front and rear drive shafts and the four-wheel drive sensor. You can now remove the transfer case unit.

Remove the bolts and the retainer clip that hold it in place. Remove the clutch coupling, output shaft drive gear, snap rings and the input and output shafts. The rebuild kit that you ordered will include these parts to replace the ones that are worn out. Lubricate and install the replacement parts in reverse order. After you have reassembled the transfer case, place it back into position and attach it to your vehicle. Fill it with lubricating fluid and reattach the skip plate.

While you are beneath your vehicle, check the transmission. You may need to order manual transmission parts to rebuild it as well.
